Caribou Project

Directed and written by Melaw Nakehk’o and Lesley Johnson

Produced by Coty Savard

Caribou are one of Canada’s most iconic and ecologically significant species with an incredible breadth of diversity. They are also an important species to humans; deeply intertwined in the culture of many Indigenous nations as a resource and source of sustenance. Even with such significance, caribou have suffered a steep decline of 60 percent in Canada since 1970. Following the caribou in their yearly migratory cycle, the film asks “what can those who live closest to the caribou tell us about why this decline is happening?”
