Far from the corpses and burials they oversee, funeral directors are uttering a heartfelt lament. What has become of bereavement, as traditional collective rituals erode in their communities and people increasingly practise social distancing? Funeral directors are amazingly frank and live in a unique world. We meet them during their downtime and record their thoughts and philosophy of life. In New Brunswick’s rural areas, the role they play among the living is barely acknowledged; they are a virtually invisible link in the health-system chain.
