This Is Not a Ceremony is part performance, part participatory media that asks us to consider our role in witnessing documentary stories of social injustice.

With two young trickster poets as your guides, you will be transported to a place free from linear time, where baskets of buffalo tongue and community protocols confront our modern notions of empathy and personal responsibility. In this place, you will observe the retelling of two tragic events in the lives of Indigenous men and be challenged to share with others what you’ve seen and heard.

Darkly humorous and occasionally caustic, This Is Not a Ceremony illustrates the importance of “bearing witness” within the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), DeneSuline (Dene), Lutselk’e Dene (Dene) and Nuuchahnulth communities and offers contemporary insights into the struggles and conflicts of growing up an Indigenous man in Canada.
