Diane, 71, lives in Yellowknife and recycles copper from electrical cables used in the now-closed Diavik diamond mine. Over the course of a seven-year-partnership with the mining company, Diane’s volunteer efforts have resulted in $1.5 million in donations to the community.
Intimate and luminous, the short is a portrait of an unstoppable woman and of her innovative project. Alongside footage of Diane’s daily life, the film documents the steps involved in transforming copper into electrical wire: extraction, refining, extruding the thick copper into wires and sheathing it. And it shows its lifespan from industrial use to removal.
