La jeune fille qui pleurait des perles is a clever fable about the power of fiction, told by a wealthy old man to his granddaughter, Louki. On his 80th birthday, in his Parisian villa, the grandfather catches Louki rummaging around, trying to purloin a unique pearl. Recognizing his own boldness in her, he shares the secret of the precious pearl. As an orphan in 1910 Montréal, he peers through a hole in the wall of the miserable tenement he is squatting in and discovers the secret of a girl who is persecuted by her in-laws: whenever she cries, her tears turn into pearls.
