Polka transports us inside Velázquez’s painting, changing dimensions to reveal the elementary particles that make up matter. We see the 240,000 pins of the Alexeïeff-Parker pin screen embark on a journey through the great works of art history, from one iconic image to another. The film is an irreverent metaphor for the matter that makes up a painting, a ballet of pins that leads us, through multiple detours, to the creation and then the disintegration of Velázquez’s painting, illustrating the life cycle of atoms and particles.
