The Duck Factory

Directed by Kevin Settee
Written by Kevin Settee and Alex Wilson
Produced by Alicia Smith

The Duck Factory weaves archival, verité and interviews with Indigenous families and communities directly impacted by a vast network of water control structures, owned by Ducks Unlimited- a Canadian conservation organization- along the Saskatchewan River Delta in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The structures – which locals claim are largely unmaintained – have altered lakes, rivers, and creeks, and have dispossessed people, fish, and animals. Elders report that “everything is dried out”.
Co-written by Alex Wilson and Kevin Settee, the film asks, “What does land back look like in this context?” and forefronts Cree worldview and Indigenous science in considering the health and future of this vital waterway – the largest freshwater delta in North America – as we move toward a global water crisis.
