Bastard is a story about abandonment, betrayal and control. It is the story of a fatherless boy named George Ramsey Simpson who grew up to become “The Little Emperor” as the head of the Hudson’s Bay Company. The story is told from the POV of Commodity, one of Simpson’s many country wives (aka bed warmers), a Metis from Moose Factory who believes she could repair herself by becoming white.
