Unhoused on the Homelands

‘Unhoused on Homelands’ explores the housing crisis in SombaK’e (Yellowknife, the Northwest Territories), focusing on the community of N’dilo. This short documentary will feature personal stories from Indigenous northerners, shedding light on the struggles they face due to displacement, inadequate and unaffordable housing, and the impacts of the NWT Housing Corporation and the Canadian Mortgage Housing Association. The film will give audiences a glimpse into the northern housing landscape. There is however a shortage of government support that should be offered to the many northern Indigenous peoples who cannot afford to build a house they can call home; one that can be owned on their own inherent ancestral homelands, moving away government housing and into a way of living that is in alignment with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
