Bastard

Written and directed by Terril Calder

Produced by Jelena Popović

Bastard is a story about abandonment, betrayal and control. It is the story of George Ramsey Simpson who grew up to become “The Little Emperor” as the head of the Hudson’s Bay Company. The story is told from the POV of Margaret Taylor aka Commodity, one of Simpson’s many country wives, a Metis from Moose Factory whom he came closest to loving. As he comes back from one of his travels to Europe with a new, politically correct, properly white wife, his 18 year old cousin named Lady Frances, he not only discards Margaret but also officially shifts the course of Canadian history away from fur trade collaboration between Europeans and Indigenous people towards pure colonial dominance. The film will attempt to contrast colonial conformity and confinement with an external wild beauty.
