Eastern Documentary Unit

Located in Montreal, covering the Atlantic provinces and English-language projects from Quebec.

With boots on the ground in St. John’s, Halifax and Montreal, our team works with filmmakers and co-producers across English language Quebec, the four Atlantic provinces and Nunatsiavut. Feature and short form documentary make up the lion’s share of our production slate. About 20% of our slate is animation, hybrid animation-documentary and interactive stories. As part of our commitment to representational equity behind and in front of the camera, we create select training opportunities in craft positions for individuals from underrepresented communities annually.

We typically have about 25 projects underway at any point in time – projects that reflect the characteristics of our geography and the storytellers who call it home. We aim to produce impactful cinema that is distinctly Canadian and contributes to our humanity here and around the globe. We look for deeply local stories that go beyond the parameters of location and for international stories that reverberate “at home”.

2020/2021 studio releases include Jordan Canning and Howie Shia’s poignant reminder of the fleeting joys of life in their animated short 4 North A; Andrea Dorfman reunites with poet Tanya Davis to craft tender and profound animation on the theme of isolation with How To Be At Home; Millefiore Clarkes reflects on the nature of love in the documentary short Love In Quarantine; creative directors Bruce Alcock and Jeremy Mendes place one foot firmly in the past and one in the future in the innovative mobile story Far Away From Far Away; and Courtney Montour’s Mary Two-Axe Earley: I Am Indian Again creates a deeply personal homage to the late Mohawk feminist trailblazer.
