Animation pioneer Norman McLaren’s legacy of artistic excellence and creative invention lives on at the Academy Award®-winning Animation Studio he founded in 1941, in our people, and in our projects.
The Studio has always been an active creative laboratory, equipped with Oxberry camera stands, stop-motion studios, workshops, and recently with dome and VR production and prototyping suites. Every artist we work with brings a unique style and creative process, requiring creative tools and technical solutions that function as natural extensions of their work, so the studio team has become expert at inventive custom-fitting. The goal is always to achieve the finest technical results that best represent the artist’s creative vision, which regularly means venturing far off the beaten path with prototyping as a fundamental part of our process.
Located in Montreal, the Animation Studio works with singular and inventive creators from across Canada. We’ve accelerated the development of new, culturally diverse Canadian talent through Hothouse, the NFB’s flagship filmmaker apprenticeship program. We have long prioritised emerging and veteran women filmmakers, both Canadian and international. The studio maintains a unique global distinction through its many international co-productions with partners from around the world.
Working at the Animation Studio means being part of an artistic community where artists and their creative collaborators are uncompromisingly well-supported in realising their vision. It’s a vibrant agora of talents and ideas where new and emerging artists work alongside many of Canada’s most accomplished, and where those ideas and expertise are shared and celebrated.
