French Animation Studio

Our production philosophy is to touch and move our audiences through film projects that privilege the role of creators and prioritize the creative process, with the aim of producing works that stimulate creative and community spirit among filmmakers working together.

Headed by Julie Roy, the NFB’s French Program Animation Studio is a creative space in which creative endeavours are marked by research, freedom of expression, innovation, and experimentation. We are looking for strong and singular narrative or experimental film proposals that stand out through their aesthetic and technical approaches (across a wide range of animation techniques).

At the studio level, we favour a balanced programming approach, allowing us to reach diverse audiences: from narrative films that tell stories in a more conventional manner, through to experimental films aimed for particular niches and interactive and immersive projects found in public spaces.

The studio is based in Montreal, but covers all francophone territory, producing linear animation as well as immersive animation and installations. At any time, there are nearly two dozen projects on the go, at all stages of the process, from development to launch. Our notable recent works include  The Physics of Sorrowdirected by Theodore Ushev and produced by Marc Bertrand, which earned an honorable mention from the 2019 TIFF jury; and  The Subject (2018), directed by Patrick Bouchard and produced by Julie Roy, which was a selection at Cannes.

Our production philosophy is to touch and move our audiences through film projects that privilege the role of creators and prioritize the creative process, with the aim of producing works that stimulate creative and community spirit among filmmakers working together.
