With offices in Montreal and Halifax, we produce English-language projects from Quebec and the Atlantic provinces.
Table of Contents
The Eastern Documentary Unit works closely with talented and skilled Canadian directors and coproducers to produce creative, impactful and enduring documentaries that reflect the diverse perspectives found in the regions we serve.
Building on a distinguished legacy that includes the 1967 Fogo Process films and The Things I Cannot Change, both precursors to the NFB’s ground-breaking Challenge For Change program, our full production unit continues to champion storytelling that initiates social change and shines a light on our shared humanity.
We collaborate with emerging and established Canadian documentary filmmakers who demonstrate a strong vision and a unique voice. We aim to make films that push boundaries – in story, form and with the audiences we seek to reach.
Recent projects include such award-winning films as Nalujuk Night (Jennie Williams), Perfecting The Art of Longing (Kitra Cahana), Dear Audrey (Jeremiah Hayes) and Seguridad (Tamara Segura).
What are we looking for?
- Powerful and meaningful engagement with contemporary subjects, addressed in an original manner, with the potential to make a real impact on audiences and society.
- A clear point of view, an unusual angle, and a surprising narrative arc related to the topic.
- An original approach and noteworthy access to the subject, participants, or events.
- Proposals that showcase diverse lived experiences and representations of the regions we work in.
- An approach that innovates documentary practices and strays from the beaten path.
